Opening days are full of promise, and we will soon see what the Yankees have in store for 2011.

The Yankees will meet the Detroit Tigers at 1:05 p.m. Thursday at Yankee Stadium, the first time they have opened a season at home since 2008, when they beat Toronto, 3-2, on April 1.

Severe storms bear down on Sarasota

A cluster of severe thunderstorms will soon begin to hit the Sarasota-Bradenton area from Siesta Key north, according to the National Weather Service. The National Weather Service reported a 41 mph wind gust near Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport at 2:17 p.m.

The weather service warns that the storms are expected to continue through 3:15 p.m.

Expect gusty winds of 45 to 55 mph and torrential rains. The area is still under a tornado watch, although the threat appears to be diminishing. Forecasters say they do not want to rule out the possibility of tornadoes as the weather system moves southward into warmer, more moist air.

Earlier
Several storms are still approaching Southwest Florida from the Gulf of Mexico and are expected to begin bringing rain and powerful thunderstorms within the hour. The storms, however, are not expected to be as severe as those that swept through the Tampa and Lakeland areas.

"We're not expecting the activity to be as crazy as it was further north, but the potential still exists," said, Andrew McKaughan a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Ruskin.

Manatee, Sarasota and Charlotte, and several other counties, remain under a tornado watch because forecasters are not ruling out the possibility for additional tornadoes. The watch will continue through 8 p.m. today, or until the severe weather threat subsides.

Thunderstorm activity in the system is beginning to wane and move farther south. It is not showing the strong rotation present in the cells that passed over the Tampa region.

Cesar Chavez’s birthday

Amid all the big, dramatic news dominating the world today, observing Cesar Chavez’s birthday March 31 is a reminder of the power of simple, grass-roots organizing and years of persistent plugging away for justice.
We live in times when a government can be overthrown in a matter of weeks by a Twitter-organized popular uprising. It’s a little hard to imagine the decades-long dedication with which Chavez and his followers worked to change the mistreatment, physical danger and scandalously low wages endured by farm workers in this country.
Though conditions are still far from ideal in U.S. agriculture, there’s been immense improvement. And the fight continues to be fought with the tactics developed by Chavez and what is now known as the United Farm Workers Union. For instance, grass roots-organized boycotts were responsible for the recent victories by Florida tomato workers in getting higher price guarantees from major restaurant companies, bringing up wages a crucial few cents per bushel.
The grape and lettuce boycotts of the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s led by Chavez were a core part of many Catholics’ introduction to the concept of practicing everyday social justice through their grocery purchases. Today such consciousness is played out in parishes around the country that ban plastic water bottles or that use and sell products like Catholic Relief Services’ Fair Trade coffee and chocolate.

Britney Spears Doesn't Care About Any Negative Press

The pop idol -- who is about to start a whirlwind tour for her new album Femme Fatale -- has a thicker skin these days. Britney Spears has opened up about how she deals with cynical commentary about herself: with the support of her fam.

"I have such an amazing family that supports me in everything that I do. We brush it off. When you're young and you're starting out a lot of it can be a little annoying. You get to a point where it's enough already and you just brush them all off and everyone kind of laughs at them,” she said.

Sounds like Brit has learned a thing or two since her "Hit Me Baby One More Time" days. One thing that hasn't changed? Her love for hitting the road.

“It's been two years since I did a major tour. It's pretty crazy on the road. It's a completely different lifestyle. You get used to it and you just grow to love it - I have been missing it. The tours and everything make it worth what I do," she told New York radio station Z100.

This pop princess might be turning into a grown, tenacious young woman. This will take some getting used to but we kind of dig it.

College Board President Steps Down

Gaston Caperton is stepping down as president of the College Board, the company that runs the SAT and Advanced Placement exams. Caperton, 71, has helmed the College Board since 1999, a period that saw the number of students taking its exams go from 3 million to 7 million. But the decade also saw the SAT lose market share to its rival, the ACT, as a standardized college entrance exam. In 2009, Fortune magazine reported that an equal number of students now take the two tests.

Michele Bachmann: I Wouldn't Have Gone Into Libya

A tea party-backed conservative congresswoman says President Barack Obama has failed to demonstrate a vital U.S. national security interest for going into Libya.

Rep. Michele Bachmann also says "I would not have gone in" to the strife-torn North African country where strongman Moammar Gadhafi is fighting to cling to power against a resistance force.

The Minnesota Republican is considering whether to seek her party's 2012 presidential nomination. She tells NBC's "Today" show she doesn't support intervening regularly in humanitarian crises.

She says the "Obama doctrine" would provide a rationale for the United States "to enter into one country after another." Bachmann says she's against giving military assistance to the rebels fighting Gadhafi, saying she fears there are al Qaida elements among their numbers.

Wisconsin Judge Halts Further Implementation Of Union Law

Exchange of explosive on the negotiations and Wisconsin Union law has moved from the presidential palace once again in court Tuesday, but it remains unclear when or even if the measure to take effect.
He supported the Republican House passed a law earlier this month, despite protests that drew 85,000 people in the State Capitol and a boycott by members of the Senate Democratic State. Can not be opposed immediately by a series of lawsuits that led to further chaos in order to complete the State Supreme Court weighs in
What seems even more likely after a hearing on Tuesday, when the Dane County judge ordered the government again on the right in standby mode while it considers a broader challenge of legitimacy. She criticized for ignoring the state officials told him prior to publication of the law to stop.
"It seems that the language is misunderstood or ignored, but what I have said, is to continue the implementation of (the law)," said Dane County circuit judge Marianne Sumi during the hearing. "This is what I want to be clear."
Sumi additional arguments on Friday to hear more words to battle with Republican legislative leaders of the State open meetings law during the debate on this measure. It is also considered to Republican claims that the law went into effect at the end of last week published a technical agency, the state suddenly on the Internet.
If you decide that it did not become law or Saturday, and the decision may be a legitimate partner by the Supreme Court of the State, which was studying whether to participate in the request for the Court of Appeal in cases involving heard.
Back and forth to make the debate often between angry and Scott Walker, governor of the new mandate, his Republican allies in the Legislature of the state of trade unions in the public sector.
And pushed the Walker and the Republican Party and strongly in their bargaining rights of workers to remove the State, using a maneuver surprise parliamentary break the deadlock a week to get approval and then find there is another way for the deployment of law on the prevention of Sumy, Secretary of State to do so.
The State Department will mean Steve Justice spokesman said the agency continues to believe that the law is published and shall enter into force.
Declaration
Mike said the mandate of the Wisconsin Department of Administration and Secretary Huebsch, a senior aide to Walker, in a statement to the Agency, and the order of the judge to evaluate.
Released earlier this month state of emergency order if Sumi, Secretary of State Doug La Follette does not prohibit the deployment of the law. Republican leaders avoid the issue, convincing the Legislative Reference Bureau, another agency of State and Law on its website on Friday publication. He claimed the Republican Party in the step up to the publication and said that the law will go into effect Saturday.
Office said the reference can not publish a draft law without a history and Secretary of State - Democratic Dane County District Attorney Ismael Ozanne - The plaintiff in the case heard Tuesday. Lawyers for the Foreign Ministry of Justice, which represents the Republicans, the case does not mean anything, because legislators immune from civil suits and the law enters into force.
The request of the Prosecutor in the province Sumi to announce the publication of the law, but declined to state, that he wanted more evidence to hear. But issued a new ban it, warning that anyone who violates this man will face sanctions.
"Families and Wisconsin hope that the (Governor), Scott Walker and his Republican allies in the Legislative Council will begin at the end of the day in the judicial process and respect for our country any harm they have done work for the families of our State, Stephanie Bloomingdale, Minister against the State Treasury CIO, Wisconsin, He said in a statement.
Justice Department lawyers maintain Sumi is not authorized to intervene in the legislative process. The head of the House of Representatives Jeff Fitzgerald, R-Horicon, said in a statement that once Sumi injected himself incorrectly in the legislative process.
"Today, her actions still flies in the face of division of powers between the three branches of government," said Fitzgerald.
The law is the flash point of controversy, which is displayed in the Walker February.
The resolution requests from the public sector employees to increase their contribution to their pensions and health insurance. This behavior also means the right to collective bargaining for everything except wages. He insisted Walker, who wrote the law, there is a need to measure to help bridge the budget deficit in the state. But Democrats see the bill as a political movement to cripple unions, traditionally strong supporters of their campaign.
Tens of thousands of people in almost non-stop demonstrations in the state Capitol for nearly three weeks, Senate Democrats fled the state to Illinois, one vote in the standing room.
Has the Republicans who control the legislative branch of the deadlock by removing what they said was financial elements of the plan on March 9, allowing the Senate to vote without a quorum. House of Representatives approved the measure tomorrow, Walker and signed into law on March 11.
Dane County has lifted the Executive Kathleen Falk, a Democrat, and several trade unions suit challenging the vote in the Senate, arguing that the legislation still contains the components of the last fiscal. These charges are still pending.

Scarborough Hits Liberals For Hypocrisy On Libya

In his opinion piece at Politico today, Joe Scarborough asks, "How can liberals call for Qadhafi's ouster when they opposed the war against Saddam?"

It's a good question! And it would have helped if Scarborough had, you know, identified some liberals who were taking that stance, so they could be asked that. You know, like, maybe a link, or something? So I could see such hypocrisy in action? This is apparently too much to ask.

But, okay! Scarborough says that "for a decade," President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney were compared to Hitler and Stalin, "condemned as an immoral beast who killed women and children to get his bloody hands on Iraqi oil," by anti-war activists and CODE PINK, etc. "But," Scarborough says, "in the morally murky afterglow of the Obama years, the certainty of these secular saints has melted away."

What's At Stake In The Massive Walmart Anti-Discrimination Case Before The Supreme Court

Wal-Mart Stores, the largest retailer in the world, and the Supreme Court on Tuesday to argue that the court of a class action to combat discrimination lawsuit by female employees that have cost billions of stops dealer. In the work for 10 years, could be commensurate with the largest class action civil rights case in U.S. history to do so.
In early 2001, more than 100 employees accused Wal-Mart, which pulled in $ 14.1 billion in profits last year, although sales remain the United States, and pay his employees less than men in similar positions and in favor of men in promotions to the stores of the United States 3400 By the end of 1998. He denied any wrongdoing, Wal-Mart, said that its policy prohibits corporations, discrimination, and encourage diversity and ensure equality of treatment.
Wal-Mart and victory would be a terrible setback for civil rights, and legal experts say the absence of a mechanism that recognizes the workers themselves against discrimination.
"Some employers calculus and economic integration that it will not be liable for discrimination if they are made, and so they can continue the status quo until someone holds them responsible for this," said Marcia Greenberger, co-chair of the National Women's Law Center. "I think that win [against] Wal-Mart will not change."
Questioning the legality of the Supreme Court to consider whether there is the largest retailer in the world of discrimination, but it is a technical issue: Do the statistics enough so that these women that the case began a decade ago to be able to make a large group of staff at National current and former to put into practice Costume category?Wal-Mart will argue in court that the women in the different stores you do not have enough in common to make the work of a single class action.
But, as a class action lawsuit at Wal-Mart is an important means to combat discrimination on the implementation of laws, experts say, because they allow employees to group together the costs of litigation and information through the case, and demand applies to employers, as an individual of his or her own.
"If this class is the mechanism of action is flawed, and I fear that large quantities of discrimination, which will remain in the shadows and the United Nations, that is correct," said Greenberger. "This means that it will not go astray in the budgets of American families across the country of your salary got family members that this is really worth, this is a difficult time for staff and their families to be discriminated against in wages and deception."

Government Shutdown Could Slow Tax Refunds, Crimp Use Of Largest Federal Anti-Poverty Program

The government shut down for a long strike for many poor families of America, and to provide program access limited or significant delays in the federal government against poverty Income Tax Credit.
In the past year, 26 million families more than $ 59 billion U.S. dollars from the discount, according to the Ministry of Treasury. While the vast majority of the beneficiaries may be affected by the closure of government possible, which comes a little earlier for a week of the deadline this returns the tax April 18 the size of individual large recipients discount many families still affected by a problem with payments to alleviate poverty. May be such a pain an important federal effort to combat poverty during the economic downturn, the worst economic casting since the Great Depression.
Details of a possible shut down - including the potential duration and effects - is still not clear. Even if Congress can not reach an agreement on government operations continue to do so, some specific programs and functions of "core" and allowed to continue running.
But it remains to see exactly which programs will be considered basic, and some of the activities undertaken by the Internal Revenue Service may not be. And rejected the IRS and the Treasury Department to comment on this report, but political observers say that while it is very difficult for the government's closure will stop collecting taxes, and other core functions of the IRS - including the provision of billions in tax refunds may be affected - --.
"... Our expectations are the taxes will be processed as if it does not close," said Christina Martin Firvida, director of economic security for government relations of the Association. "We're unclear whether there will be a significant delay in the payment, including reimbursements to include discount."
For many people their money from tax rebate program is an important element of their annual income, and sometimes as much as 30 percent of funding to their households. The discount rate average of about $ 2.250, but some families receiving as much as $ 5,666, depending on the circumstances. Benefits are scaled to the number of children in the family and annual household income. Individuals $ 13.460 or less, receive $ 467 of the opponent, while families with three children, and $ 5,666 benefit if they receive less than $ 48.362. For families at the lower end of the economic spectrum, and the opponent is required to pay their bills.
Fortunately, most poor families file their payments early in the season relatively taxes, in the hope that the government controls the speed. But many families are still waiting until mid-April tax filing deadline, and about a quarter of American families to qualify for the discount does not really apply, as Adam Perry, an organizer of the builders of the area of capital assets' discount capital assistance program. These people are often ignorant of the tax file in much later in the season, because they do not realize that they are eligible for benefits to combat poverty in the coming months.

Libya War:Gaddafi Hometown

Libyan government tanks and rockets blunted a rebel assault on Moammar Gadhafi's hometown of Sirte on Tuesday and drove back the ragtag army of irregulars, even as world leaders prepared to debate the country future in London.Rockets and tank fire sent Libya's rebel volunteers in a panicked scramble away from the front lines, before the opposition was able to bring up truck mounted rocket launchers of their own and return fire.

The two sides traded salvos over the small hamlet of Bin Jawwad amid the thunderous crash of rockets and artillery shells as plumes of smoke erupted from the town. The steady drum of heavy machine gun fire and the pop of small arms could also be heard above the din.

"There aren't a lot of us in Bin Jawwad right now," said Faisal Ali, a 20 year-old-rebel who had retreated from the town. "If (Gadhafi) has enough firepower and forces using tanks, he will surely take over Bin Jawwad," he added, noting that the rebels' special forces, one of their few trained units, had not yet retreated.

The latest rebel setback emphasizes the see-saw nature of this conflict and how the opposition is still no match for the superior firepower and organization of Gadhafi's forces, despite an international campaign of deadly airstrikes.

A U.N.-mandated no-fly zone and campaign of strikes by the U.S. and its allies helped rebel forces regain territory lost of the past week, when they were on the brink of defeat by government forces.

Jennifer Garner To Star In Young Reboot

This beloved classic is getting a facelift. Quite literally.

Disney has closed a deal for a big screen reboot of Agatha Christie's "Miss Marple" mystery novel series, and the House of Mouse is making substantial changes to the story. Deadline reports that, instead of the British grandma Jane Marple portrayed in the books and in previous big screen incarnations, the film series will instead feature a young, far more svelte amateur sleuth, to be played by Jennifer Garner.

Garner, of course, has plenty of screen experience when it comes to solving mysteries, starring in the longrunning TV spy show, "Alias." This will be a bit different; the novels, 12 in all, were written from the 1930-70's. Whether the films will stay in that considerable span of time, or be brought up to date has yet to be announced.

Marple has been played by a number of notable actors, both on TV and the big screen. The first films starred Margaret Rutherford, while Angela Landsbury took on the role in the star-studded "The Mirror Crack'd," which included Tony Curtis and Elizabeth Taylor.

Lady Gaga Sings with Mariachi Band at Her 25th Birthday Party

Happy quarter-century, Lady Gaga! The singer turns 25 today and celebrated her big day with 60 close friends over the weekend in LA.

Lady Gaga is 25! (Bauer Griffin)
Gaga held her party at La Cita, a low-key Mexican hotspot, and turned the dinner into a mini concert! She took the stage with the restaurant's Mariachi band and belted out some of her hits, including "Born This Way" and some Madonna hits. Luckily, her "Born This Way" rendition was caught on video!

(So, add that to her Country Road remix of the new hit single, and that makes three awesome "Born This Way" versions!)

A source at the party said (via Us magazine) "she was onstage for most of the night performing for all her friends. No one knew she was going to go up there and perform with them, I think she just loves to be on stage and doing what she does so well."

Apparently there were several birthday cakes at her party, and while she wasn't at the mic in her sparkling black dress, she walked around and gabbed with her friends while nibbling on cake. "She was walking around saying hi to everyone," the source said. "It was an amazing night."

Meet Aiden, Rod Stewart's eighth baby and, he says, his last

By LIZ THOMAS

Happy Family: Rod Stewart with Penny Lancaster and their second - his eighth - baby

It looks like a photo of a family spanning three generations. Of course, in fact it shows only two.

Rod Stewart poses with wife Penny Lancaster and son Aiden after becoming a father for the eighth time, aged 66.

The couple, who have another son, five-year-old Alistair, spent two years trying to conceive and Miss Lancaster, 39, underwent three rounds of IVF.

This week's Hello! magazine

They said they were so nervous that they kept news of the pregnancy secret for as long as possible.

Stewart said: 'Aiden truly is a miracle. In the beginning we took it for granted that our second child would be as easy to conceive as Alistair was, but the long journey was more than worth it.'

The singer said that Aide, born on February 16, looks like him.

And he told this week's Hello! magazine: 'My way of settling him when he's crying from colic is to carry him around, singing to him.'

Stewart has previously said Aiden will be his last child, adding: 'I can't have any more kids, otherwise I'll be touring until I'm 90.'

But he admitted he would to 'pretty much anything' to keep Miss Lancaster happy - so the final decision could be down to her.

The troubled actress, who was wearing barely a scrap of make-up, channelled the Native American look by wearing her hair in plaits.

She was joined by a male friend as they dined at The Otherroom in Venice Beach - just down the road from the jewellery store where she allegedly stole a $2,500 necklace.

Trendy: The actress teamed her Pocahontas-style hair with a below-the-knee tribal-inspired sweater

Lindsay teamed her Pocahontas-style hair with a below-the-knee tribal-inspired sweater.

The 24-year-old has now dropped her surname and wants to be known as just Lindsay.
Her reasoning is not to create a stronger showbiz brand, according to her mother Dina, however.

The 48-year-old, who also revealed that she and daughter Ali, 17, will be losing the name too - said the decision was taken to distance herself from disgraced father Michael.

ut and about: The actress dined at The Otherroom, just down the road from the jewellery store where she allegedly stole a $2,500 necklace

TMZ reports today that Major has got a protective order from a judge in Florida ordering Michael to stay 500 feet away from her and have no other contact.

According to the website, she is afraid of Michael coming after her from coast-to-coast, prompting her to ask a judge 2,500 away in Sarasota County to protect her from him.

Family feud: The actress and her mother Dina don't want to be associated with Michael Lohan and dropping their last name

Michael was charged last week with assaulting her. In court documents she claims 'he took a wet towel over my mouth + nose + was strangling me' before throwing her against the footrest of the bed.

She further claimed he sliced himself with a razor blade and said if she went to police 'he would say I injured him. He is insane'.

Michael claims Major assaulted him.

While his daughter might be dropping her surname, her mother Dina and sister Ali will use the maiden name Sullivan.

However, it's believed that her brother, Michael Lohan, Jnr, 22, will keep his father's name.

Sam Attwater wins Dancing On Ice 2011

By JODY THOMPSON

Winner: Former EastEnders star Sam Attwater lifted the Dancing On Ice 2011 trophy after skating a 'passionate' Bolero with partner Brianne Delcourt

Former EastEnders star Sam Attwater was crowned the Dancing On Ice 2011 champion after one of the tightest grand finals the show has ever seen

The 24-year-actor won the public's hearts with his 'passionate' version of show star's Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean's Bolero - despite accidentally leaving his hand on her breast at the end as they sprawled on the ice.

Sam gushed about Brianne, 29, too as he lifted the winner's trophy, saying: 'I've had the time of my life. I've made a friend for life and I wouldn't be here now if it wasn't for Brianne.'

High five: The pair were thrilled to be crowned champions - and Sam dedicated his win to Brianne, who he said would be a 'friend for life'

The pair won through with their consistently good skating since the show started in January and Sam had been the bookies' favourite since day one.

However, they had caused controversy earlier in the show's run over accusations they had tried to manipulate viewers with a 'faux-mance' between themselves.

In February, they had told show host Phillip Schofield they were 'an item' as they conducted a series of photoshoots in glossy magazines, even posing in bed with just their ice skates and giving quotes saying they ‘loved each other to bits’ and had met each other’s parents.

The ill-feeling's mutual! Real Housewives of Beverly Hills rivals Camille and Kyle paste on smiles for photo call at Hollywood party

By Daily Mail Reporter

Say cheese: Camille Grammar, left, looks away from rival Kyle Richards as they posed with their Real Housewives of Beverly Hills co-star Adrienne Maloof and Taylor Armstrong at a Hollywood party last night

It doesn't take a body language expert to figure out what's going on here.

In fact there's no hiding the mutual disdain between Real Housewives of Beverly Hills stars Camille Grammer and Kyle Richards.

The infamous foes were pictured together on a blue carpet last night at Hollywood gossip columnist Perez Hilton's birthday party.

And it seems the pair could hardly bare to look in the same direction as each other, with Camille distractedly averting her gaze away from Kyle.

Kyle, 42, and Camille, who is also 42 and the ex wife of Frasier star Kelsey Grammer, constantly fell out during the first season of their Bravo reality TV show.

In true Hollywood style, they attempted to patch things up - but their precarious relationship was constantly rocked by back-stabbing and two-faced behaviour.

Friend or foe? The duo constantly fell out during the first season of their Bravo reality show. They were both in blue last night for gossip columnist Perez Hilton's 33rd birthday party

They were joined by their co-stars Adrienne Maloof and Taylor Armstrong at last night Blue Ball party for Perez.

However fellow cast members Lisa Vanderpump and Kim Richards, Kyle's sister, were not in attendance.

Kim and Kyle - who were also constantly at loggerheads during the show - are the aunties of socialite and heiress Paris Hilton.

Making an effort: Former Disney star Selena Gomez poses with Perez as she turned up to the event with a blue ensemble, plus blue lip stick and make-up

Best foot forward: Dancing With The Stars contestant, WWE star Chris Jericho and his professional dancer partner Lacey Schwimmer

Other guests at last night's Hollywood party included 18-year-old former Disney star Selena Gomez, who joined the throng of guests in wearing a blue outfit.

But she made an extra special effort, sprucing up her look with blue lipstick and eye make-up.

Dancing With The Stars professional Lacey Schwimmer and her WWE dance partner Chris Jericho also came along.

Meanwhile, burlesque star Dita Von Teese provided some of the entertainment at the gig, changing from her floor-length blue gown into a sexy, sequinned pink number on stage.

By Chris Johnson

Crazy scenes: A growing crowd of 18,000 hopeful pictured in the car park of the LA Sports Arena in Los Angeles today where the first U.S. X Factor auditions got underway

X Factor U.S. officially got rolling today as thousands upon thousands of hopefuls descended on Los Angeles for the first round of auditions.

A swarming crowd of around 18,000 people are assembled in the car park at the LA Sports Arena in Downtown Los Angeles - making it the largest talent show turnout the city has seen.

Despite the rainy weather, would-be contestant camped out overnight in a bid to get a good spot before doors opened at 9am this morning.

Not deterred: Despite the rainy weather, wannabes braved the elements as they took their place in the huge queue in a bid to get an audition

A show insider told MailOnline: 'The scenes down here a crazy. There are around 18,000 people here and the numbers are growing by the second.

'There's gridlock on the freeways into the venue, it's absolute chaos.

'These auditions are going to be going on well into the night - there are a lot of people to get through.'

Dedicated: Would-be-contestants camped out over night before doors opened at 9am this morning

Front of the queue: Revellers stand behind the gated area at dusk

As it's the first round of auditions, hopefuls will perform in front of producers of the show, rather than the judges, which has still not been revealed in full.

Simon Cowell, who is heading the panel, has revealed one of the judges however - record executive and music producer Antonio 'L.A.' Reid.

He has helped launch the careers of stars including Mariah Carey, Pink, Rihanna, Kanye West and Justin Bieber.

She's got swagger: Kameron Kemp shows off her free-styling rapping abilities while another fan waves an LA Reid banner, one of the judges on the show

Today's crowd is a mixed bunch, with people ranging in age from 12 to the ripe old age of 87.

Maranda Jones, 16, from Huntington Beach, Los Angeles, plans to wow producers with a song she wrote herself.

The teen, who was joined by her father, said: 'I hope I'm good enough. I'm just so excited to be here. I know Simon wants confidence and if I give it everything I've got then I can't go wrong.

'I'm excited, not nervous,' she added confidently.

Far and wide: Antonia Duggar, left, travelled all the way from Liverpool in the UK to attend the auditions

Mixed crowd: A father and son duo arrived with a huge double bass in tow

Karen Turner, 18, from Newport Beach insisted she would not be fazed if she comes face-to-face with Cowell at a later audition.

'Simon doesn't scare me. I plan on intimidating him! That will shock him from the start!'

Paul Pointer, 54, is hoping X Factor will give him a chance to get recognition, despite his age.

He said: 'I want to thank Simon for giving people like me, my age the chance to live our dream.

'I might be older than most but I sure as hell ain't gonna let that stop me!'

Madding crowd: Teams of people arrived to the audition venue and the crowd is still growing

Across the swelling crowd, hopeful are waving banners as they excitedly wait to see if they will get the chance to audition.

One group had assembled a giant X out of fizzy drinks cans and there is also a hudge 3D stage where people can have their photographs taken.

There has been much speculation about who the other judges will be for the American version of X Factor, which kicks off in September on Fox.

Names touted have included former Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger and George Michael.

Meanwhile, Cheryl Cole, who is a judge on the British show, is still very much in the frame to join the panel.

However some Fox executives are believed to be less than keen after audience focus groups showed that she was not that popular in the States.

The winner of the show will receive a Sony Music recording contract worth $5 million - which trumps the £1m deal offered on the British show.

The judges: So far Simon Cowell and LA Reid have been confirmed as judges on the U.S. panel
